  Faster! Faster! is full of playfulness. The vivid, sunny colours and how they contrast each other, the movement within the lines and the subjects themselves all add to this playfulness, taking us along for the ride.

  The mergansers and the fish all head in the same direction, seemingly all part of this game. Balance and harmony are held within the subjects themselves, emphasized by the balance in colour and composition.

  The yellows of the sky and the yellows of the line of perch frame the greens and blues within the hills and lake. These all work together to hold the mergansers, contrasting to and highlighting the birds’ siennas, browns , whites and blue-greys.

  Not everyone appreciates the wild turkey, but I loved having this shy bird unexpectedly visit me every day for one week at the lake. I’m amazed at the beautiful patterned browns, oranges and greys of the feathers, and am surprised at this large bird’s quickness and agility- as it ran and flew away at my slightest movement.

  In Watching from the Treetops, the trees’ lines and their bold, vibrant reds frame and support the turkey, both literally and symbolically. The Wild Turkey is the focus, standing alert atop a branch.  The scene is autumn, leaves having already fallen- a potentially dangerous time for this particular game fowl.

  The Departure captures a moment of quiet transition through the deep mythology of the High Arctic. This painting frames an intimate dialogue between a sitting polar bear and a soaring raven- two native guardians of the northern landscape. Leaning into the sacred symbolism of the raven as a messenger and spiritual guide, I wanted to explore how these animals navigate changing seasons and the profound transformations taking place within their territory.

  The composition relies on a strong diagonal tension, matching the bear's upward gaze with the upward swoop of the raven. To charge this interaction with life, I set the animals against a dense, vibrant sky of turquoise, cobalt, and violet mosaic strokes, which contrasts sharply with the quiet, snow-dotted curves of the ice below. By locking the bear and raven into this closely cropped frame, the painting transforms a simple animal encounter into a timeless, sacred moment of connection.

  In Ice Bear, I wanted to remove all physical distance between the viewer and the Arctic wilderness. This intimate portrait frames the bear’s direct, soulful gaze as it emerges from deep blue, pattern-mosaic waters. Behind the bear, the stark architecture of an ice cave- adorned with long, three dimensional icicles and geometric glacier formations- acts as a sanctuary that feels both monumental and intensely fragile.

  By anchoring the bear prominently in the foreground, my goal is to strip away the abstractions of climate data and confront you with an undeniable presence. This direct look is not a passive moment, but a silent challenge from the bear itself - forcing us to look closely at what we stand to lose and transforming a global environmental crisis into a deeply personal dialogue.
