Waiting, acrylic on canvas, 24″x36″, $1750

  Solo Exhibition at Galerie LaFab Oct 17 – Dec 6, 2026   https://lafabsurmill.ca/visual-arts/gallery/

In Waiting, I wanted to focus entirely on the silent, suspended tension that governs survival on the frozen tundra. This canvas captures a massive polar bear leaning over a seal breathing hole cut into the sea ice, its powerful hind paws anchored on a textured ridge of turquoise ice. In the High Arctic, a bear may wait for hours or even days at a single hole for a seal to surface - a focused posture that embodies extreme patience and represents the fine line between life and starvation.

To transform this heavy stillness into a pulsing environment, I emphasized the profound contrast of scale across the endless plain of sea ice. I constructed the landscape using a meticulous grid of pale grey, blues and white blocks, introducing two separate breathing holes to highlight the tactical chess match of the hunt. Together, the polar bear, the deep indigo hole in the foreground, and the seal hole far in the distance form a distinct triangulated geometry. With the number three representing balance and interconnectedness, this dynamic trio maps out the calculated risks of a shifting landscape.

Are We There Yet? acrylic on canvas, 16″x20″, $850 framed

  $850.00

Every parent has heard these words, and every child has uttered them. Are We There Yet? has fun with this timeless scenario, capturing a common merganser parent as it confidently carries three ducklings on its back across the water. While the title playfully transposes a universal human experience onto wildlife, the instinct to protect, guide, and safeguard our young remains a profound truth shared by both humankind and our feathered friends.

The composition highlights my signature blending of Post-Impressionism, subtle surrealism, and Woodland art. By placing the realistic ducks against a highly stylized backdrop, the canvas pulses with graphic energy. I built the setting sun and sky from a dense tapestry of vibrant orange, pink, and yellow pointillist dabs, which contrast sharply against the rhythmic purple and blue mosaic patterns of the water. This bold juxtaposition transforms a familiar shoreline evening into a joyful narrative celebrating the enduring bonds of family in the wild.

An Understanding, acrylic on canvas, 24″x36″, $1750

  Solo Exhibition at Galerie LaFab Oct 17 – Dec 6, 2026   https://lafabsurmill.ca/visual-arts/gallery/

In An Understanding, I wanted to look past the chaotic violence of predation to capture a moment of quiet, charged equilibrium on the tundra. By framing this non-violent encounter between a lone Arctic wolf and a small herd of caribou, the artwork focuses on a shared, knowing gaze across the icy expanse.

Rather than rendering the High Arctic as a harsh, unfeeling void, my goal was to paint a deeply connected sanctuary.

Against a rhythmic landscape of soft pastels and bold, graphic mountain ridges, the wolf and caribou look at each other with an innate understanding of the delicate, natural balance of their environment, and what they must do to survive.

  Mother, acrylic on canvas, 40″x60″

  Private Collection of the Artist

Mother is seen in the relationship between the doe and the fawn, between Mother Nature and the deer, the forest, the water, the air … and we human beings.

Balance and harmony are key in these relationships and within the elements of the painting itself.
Sky, land and water are balanced in their composition and colour.

Horizontal lines of blues in sky and water border the warm colours of the land. The birch trees cut through the horizontal sections in both their vertical direction and their bold blacks and whites, holding the overall composition together in its framework.

The mother deer is protective in her stance, standing guard over her fawn as it safely nourishes itself from the lake.
The birch trees stand as sentries, providing the deer with their protective cover. They stand straight and tall, holding the land and reaching into the sky, being nourished by and benefiting our environment and, in turn, us.

“Mother” invites the viewer into the scene. As the doe protectively holds our gaze, the viewer is drawn into the richly textured forest.  What will our relationship be with our wilderness environment?
