With Call to Action, I used the vital, surging energy of a trio of snow geese ascending over fragmented Arctic waters to explore the power of collective movement. The composition is charged with sound and motion, showcasing the birds with outstretched wings and open bills, their stark white plumage cutting dynamically against the sea. By capturing the dramatic moment of a powerful takeoff – marked by a heavy splash of textured white foam – I wanted to ground their physical resilience in an urgent, vocal rallying cry.

This flock serves as a central metaphor for the core message of my exhibition: a collective awakening and a shared push toward environmental advocacy.

    In Going with the Floe, I used an expansive panoramic canvas to capture the immense scale of the High Arctic marine wilderness. The foreground is anchored by the massive flukes of a bowhead whale diving into a vibrant blue ocean, streams of turquoise water cascading from its tail. In the upper right background, I painted a tiny row of red canvas tents sitting quietly on the landfast ice - a direct nod to my personal experience living on the sea ice off Baffin Island. Rather than presenting humans as conquerors of the landscape, my goal was to highlight our fragile, minor presence within an ecosystem ruled by ancient marine giants.

    To give the deep sea an energetic, colourful vitality, I built the ocean from a dense tapestry of pointillist dots and mosaic chunks of floating ice. By positioning our small human footprint against the endless blue peaks of the northern coastline, the composition emphasizes our quiet place within Earth's grandest sanctuaries and the natural scale that governs this landscape.

    Through the Rapids was born from the profound connection I feel to nature while paddling our waterways. The composition was directly inspired by my son's expressive exclamation- “Oh, Boy!”- as he faced a massive swell while maneuvering the Dumoine River rapids, meeting the heavy water with hopeful determination. At its core, this painting explores our universal struggles and perseverance through life's sudden turbulences.

    The bright red kayak, the solitary human-made element within the scene, represents our collective life journey, its vivid hue contrasting sharply against the wild environment. To convey the raw energy of the river, I combined contrasting artistic styles: the stylized, rhythmic mosaic dabs and pointillist patterns of the inner water are completely enveloped by heavy, heavily textured white waves rushing along the outer borders.

    The single paddle breaking through the cresting spray creates a direct diagonal link to the grey seagull soaring above, representing an ability to rise above the chaos. By using the massive, cascading foam to hide the identity of who is steering the vessel, the painting reminds us that this navigator can be any one of us.   We struggle, we persevere, and we live.
