My inspiration for Standing My Ground began with a fascination for the muskox as a living link to our planet’s deep past. To capture the Arctic’s vast, rugged and timeless landscape, I envisioned this prehistoric survivor anchored firmly against a subzero tundra gale. I built the expensive frozen plain using an intricate, mosaic-like grid of pale blues, greys, and white tiles to give the wind a heavy, tangible presence. Fusing detailed realism in the muskox’s features with Post-Impressionist lighting and structural elements of Woodland Art, the textured brushwork honours the steadfast dignity of the North’s oldest prehistoric survivors.
